24X36 acrylic on Masonite

This is the finished version of Traces Of Snow, and my first painting for 2008.

This is a scene I saw while driving through small towns in Texas. It was right as the evening sun rays were covering the cold wet earth with rich warm hues.
I had forgotten what a challenge painting on Masonite is. I’ve gotten so use to the texture of the canvas, and how convenient it can be. But I am please with the final result.

Color and texture was my main consideration on this piece. Establishing the last warm rays of light on a Texas evening. Capturing the contrast between the cool whites on the patches of snow and the warm hues on the dried field grass was an amazing experience to paint.

Comments are always appreciated. :)

Very nice piece. Your comments re: masonite. I'm interested in using it for ultra fine detail. Do you use a sanded gesso sizing? Again congrats on a fine work.
thanks.

I triple primed the board with gesso and sanded between coats.

Thanks!
